A study on differences between films and TV series based on the same material

Introduction

With the opening of film and television market, thousands of literary outputs are adapted for films and TV series. Then, the appearance of films and TV series based on the same material causes comparison and different choices of audience. Because the original book possesses a considerable number of fans, this comparison gives rise to controversy and contradiction. The arts and technique of films and TV series have many differences in terms of aesthetic, form, plot, shoot and artistry.

The research

The research are based on the statistics from questionnaires which were given out to 20 college students in Nanjing. This questionnaire is designed to examine factors about differences between films and TV series, such as the actors and actresses, adaption, the length of works and so on. It is aimed at discovering the audiences’ opinion about the differences between films and TV series. The research choose six works to investigate as following: Fighting, Silent Separation, Tiny Times, Thirty Nine Steps, The Legendary Swordsmen, The Myth. The subjects need to choose the one they have watched before and the preference over films and TV series. Then they need show reasons about their preference.

Findings

The results of questionnaire show some obvious differences except that actors and actresses make a large part of the reasons of adoring both films and TV series. The differences mainly lie in the contributory factors of the subjects’ preferences over the two genres. Significantly, the number of people who prefer films are more than those prefer TV series.For films, the majority of people prefer it because of fancy scenes and simple plot. The facts that films are time-saving and available in the cinema are another reason for the choice. As to the adaptation from the original book, the TV series completely overpass films in terms of fidelity. For TV series, the details appeal to many people. Furthermore, the lasting broadcast of TV series, especially the favored ones, cater to the audience for quite a long period. Besides, full length of performance gives actors and actresses more space to rich the roles and act with their own feature.

Analysis and conclusions

According to the research, the length of the works of both films and TV series makes a difference in audiences’ preference and opinions. Films are usually short and use fancy scenes to catch audience’s eyes. However, TV series prefer to help plot move forward through conversation between characters. Actually,the length of two genre also decide many other factors. With the same material, TV series can completely show every details in the original book and shape many characters. Then, audience may develop a full understanding of a role and be keen on the roles. On the contrary, in the films, the director need to select the most important plots and characters to express. So, only the leading roles can be easily recognized. And then,many films are forgotten by people even they once were famous,except some classical films such as Titanic. Nevertheless, even some TV series are finished for many years, the roles in them may be remembered and put forward to talk.

The dealing of the plot of story in the two genres is also worth attention. The films have simple plot and do not bother people to think. Besides, the inconsecutive scenes may make people confused about the plot. If people do not read the book before, sometimes they might do not follow the meaning of films and characters. For TV series, they have at least several hours to depict the plot from beginning to end and people can understand the book better. What is more, the plot in the TV series must be complicated and people should consider about the following plot.

The narration approach in the two genres also plays a crucial role. The storytelling style in TV series can use various approaches to show the story. Especially,they share more features with the lives of ordinary people. However, in the films they tend to focus on the spiritual path. They use means like poems and prose and lay less importance on plot. People even have to chat with each other or search on the internet to understand the meaning of the complicated films.

Films and TV series, though similar in some ways, are regarded as different recreational events.

People always watch films with families or friends in the cinema, which requires a certain amount of quiet time and space. They think films can appeal to their ears and eyes with greater sound effects and larger screen. On the contrary, people can sit in the sofa casually and discuss about the plot when we watch TV series at home. It is more flexible and private. However, the introduction of household theater devices will narrow these differences.
