Task 1

The two tables below shows the number of international students from different source countries in Canada and the USA in two school years.

The two tables compare the number of overseas students from various source countries in Canada and the USA in the two school years from 2002 to 2003 and 2003 to 2004.

Throughout the two school years, there was a marked increase in the total number of overseas students to study in Canada whereas the number of international students decreased marginally in the USA. The total number of international students in Canada outnumbers the USA counterparts.

In Canada, Chinese students are the greatest international students group among the three source countries, rising from 5400 to 7850, an increase of 45%. India saw the second largest increase (35%) in the number of students studying in Canada and the USA came as the third, at only 9%.

By contrast, the total number of Indian students was significantly higher at two school years, at 200000 and 182000 respectively in 2002-2203 and 2003-2004, than other two countries’ international students in the USA, but its percentage declined slightly. China had the slightly higher number of overseas students studying in the USA than that of Canada, but the data for these two countries witness the similar growth in the two school years, 6% and 7% respectively.

　　Online shopping is now replacing shopping in store. Do you think it is positive or negative development? （现在网络购物逐渐替代了实体店购物。你认为这是一个积极还是消极的发展？）

　　It is true that online shopping has revolutionised the way people purchase. The unprecedented growth in people’s preference for online shopping triggers the collapse of some stores. There is likelihood that online shopping will supersede shopping in stores in the near future. From my perspective, there are at the same time positive and negative effects.

　　On the one hand, this development can be extremely positive. Comparing prices and qualities for a certain shopping item was much more difficult when reasonable purchasing decisions can only be made by visiting several stores in a few days in a row. Nowadays, by browsing websites and reviewing comments and feedback of other consumers, people can easily choose the products they desire by clicking the mouse in a blink of an eye. More favourably, products will be delivered to the doorways for people in a few days, ranging from two days in the same city or up to a five-day limit for longer distance, and thus mitigating the nuisance of carrying large bulk of items by hand for people.

　　On the other hand, the easy accessibility of technologies can also have the negative result of isolating people and discouraging real interaction. As e-commerce gradually penetrates people’s working routine, shopping online maximises people’s contact with the virtual world rather than mixing with people in their real lives. Worse still, staring at the screen for a longer time both at the workplace and at home, people tend to live a more sedentary life, and the likelihood of getting diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, soars.

　　In conclusion, online shopping has certainly had remarkable influence on people’s lives, but not all of the outcomes of this revolution have been positive. (284 words)
