1.All university students should be required to take basic science courses even if it is not the field of their study.

Disagree (should not be required)
1.Taking basic science courses may be a waste of time and energy to some students.
•They are not interested in science. (e.g. students majoring in languages, literature, or history) – force them to take the science courses – unnecessary – Students are supposed to devote more time and energy to major courses.

2.Students may feel overwhelmed if they are required to take basic science courses.
•Have to complete a large number of assignments and exams – may not do well in these courses – suffer from great pressure – have a negative impact on students’ physical and mental health

3.Requiring all students to take basic science courses will increase the financial burden of families and the university.
•Families that are financially disadvantaged cannot afford the tuition.
•The university has to hire more teachers and purchase equipment. – The expenditure will increase dramatically. – The university only has limited budget.

  2.  People now can better protect the environment than they could in the past.

  Agree
  1. Nowadays, people have advanced technology to preserve the environment.
•The government invests a large amount of money in environmental technology. – e.g. 1) develop clean, renewable energy from solar, wind and water power as alternatives for fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas – reduce air pollution; 2) improve recycling technology – convert waste into new materials; 3) electric cars

2.Citizens have raised their environmental awareness and are more willing to protect the environment.
•Receive better education – e.g. use public transportation rather than driving, separate and recycle waste, use fewer throw-away products and plastic bags

3.The government attaches more importance to environmental protection.
•Introduce laws and policies – punish illegal behaviors that pose a great threat to environment (e.g. punish factories that produce excessive greenhouse gases and waste water, restrict the use of plastic bags among the public)

3.Nowadays people are more willing to help the people who they don’t know (for example, giving food and clothes to the people who need them) than they were in the past.

  Agree
1.People are more financially capable to help others.
•Significant advances in economy – find decent jobs – make a living – support family – enhance the quality of life – satisfy material demands – are able to help others who are financially disadvantaged (e.g. donate money to charities, especially some celebrities)

2.People are motivated to help strangers because of better education.
•Teachers educate students to not only pay attention to their own academic performance, but also take more social responsibility and care about strangers. – create a harmonious and friendly society (e.g. do community service, participate in volunteer work)
•VS past: indifferent and self-interested for lack of education

3.Nowadays, with the help of technology, people have various means to help others who are in need.
•E.g. donate money to charities, use social media, raise funds and organize volunteer work on the Internet – more convenient – more willing to offer help

Disagree
1.People are too busy and overwhelmed to care about strangers.
•Live a fast-paced life and face fierce competition – suffer from great pressure and feel overwhelmed – do not have time to pay attention to what is happening around them – become indifferent and selfish
  •E.g. students, employees

2.People feel reluctant to help others for fear of being cheated.
•The society is becoming more complicated. – Some people pretend to be poor in order to get money from others. – protect their own interests – do not trust others – are less willing to help people who they do not know
•E.g. Some charities use the donation to do

3.Many people cannot satisfy their own material demands, let alone help others.
•Many countries are facing financial crises or economic recession. – Unemployment is rising all over the world. (e.g. Greece, Spain, Italy) – cannot find secure jobs – have higher cost of living (e.g. housing, transportation, food) especially in large cities – cannot make a living or support family

  4.  Taking care of pets brings important benefits to children.

  Agree
1.Taking care of pets enables children to cultivate patience and a sense of responsibility.
•They need to feed and bathe their pets on time, and take them to the vet if the pets are ill. – become considerate and understand how difficult their parents have brought them up

2.Children can have a companion if they have a pet.
•Some career-driven parents often work overtime and are too busy to accompany their children. – play and talk with their pets – will not feel lonely

3.让步段
•It is true that pets may carry some bacteria or viruses that may pose a great threat to children’s health. Moreover, there is potential danger for pets to bite or hurt children. However, as long as children can keep a sanitary environment for pets to live and take them to do regular medical check. These problems can be avoided to a large extent.

Professional athletes or performers should not be involved in politics.

Agree
  1. Most athletes or actors lack sufficient knowledge and experience of politics.
•The decision-making process in politics is complex. – be equipped with professional knowledge and experience in politics, diplomacy, economics and law
•E.g. Barak Obama: Harvard Law School
•Hillary Clinton: Yale Law School, United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013

2.Professional athletes or performers do not have enough time to be involved in politics.
•Athletes: attend regular training and participate in competitions to win medals; performers: be involved in filming for several months – time-consuming – cannot fully concentrate on political issues and do not have a direct access to citizens’ daily life – do not know the urgent needs of the public – fail to bring social welfare to citizens

3.Gossips and scandals tend to diminish the reputation of athletes or performers.
•The media industry has become more profit-oriented. – cover headline news, attract public attention, increase sales – pay more attention to the negative information of celebrities rather than their achievements
•E.g. divorce, sex scandals, drug addicts

  Disagree
1.Professional sports stars or movie stars are more likely to win support and trust from citizens.
•Have popularity and reputation among the public because of their achievements or works – be regarded as heroes and role models
•E.g. Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator): had the most name recognition in among the candidates – won the election of Governor of California

2.Many athletes or actors have extraordinary talents, willpower and diligence, which distinguish them from ordinary people.
•They have made great efforts to succeed in their own fields. – They are likely to use their skills to lead the country to success and bring social welfare to citizens
•E.g. Ronald Reagan: implemented new political and economic reforms – successfully reduced inflation while increased annual GDP – served two terms – one of the greatest presidents in the American history

3.让步段
It is true that athletes or performers may lack professional knowledge or experience of politics. However, they can improve their knowledge through education and practice. Therefore, they should still be allowed to be involved in politics.
