雅思口语Part3:Food
Q1.What effects has modern technology had on the way food is produced?
A1.Let’s start with the positive side. Modern technology has largely improved yields by accelerating growth.
For instance, genetic engineering has made it possible for animals to grow larger so that they produce more meat. And a particular kind of tech called ‘genetical modification’ has made crops hardy, tolerant of salt, coldness, and drought. However, there could also be risks. Some health groups say since the technology is relatively new, long-term impact on human health hasn’t been known yet. Some even claim that GM food could be a major factor in cancer and many other diseases.
Q2.How important is it for a country to be able to grow all the food it needs, without importing any from other countries?
A2.As a Chinese at my age,it has not ever been my concern. But imagining food shortage during the war or a natural disaster, I would be glad to be the one who can feed himself. I think it is the same as a country. The food problem is never minor, although it is not necessary to grow every kind of food inside the country. It only matters when we talk about rice, flour, meat, etc.
