Vehicles offer flexibility and mobility to people’s life and work. （用flexibility and mobility 来代替convenience真的可以提高考官在词汇上的分数。）The basic purpose of a motor vehicle is to get people from one point to another as cheaply, rapidly and safely as possible. （此外，很多同学会忽略货物运输。）Vehicles enable rapid and timely distribution of goods. Compared with the price of air, that of motor is much more competitive, attracting a wide range of businesses.

（另一个容易被忽视的汽车发展的好处是作为一个巨大的行业，汽车业促进了就业和大量其他行业的发展。）Motor industry is one of the largest industries in the world economy. Some of the giants in the field, such as Toyota, Ford and so on, provide millions of working opportunities to the people, especially those in the undeveloped areas, which guarantees to satisfy their basic living demand.（ 另外， 在汽车业的带动下，很多相关行业，如物流，包装，广告以及金融业都得到了发展。）

In spite of their merits, motor vehicles have many critics because of their detrimental effects on human lives and on air, water land and wildlife. The automobile may be the most destructive machines ever inverted. Though we tend to deny it, riding in cars is one of the most dangerous things we do in our daily lives. Since 1885, when Karl Benz built the first automobile, almost 18 million people have been killed by vehicles. Indirectly, by providing almost unlimited mobility, automobiles and highways have been the biggest factor leading to urban sprawl in the most countries with large livable land areas. An estimated one third of a city’s total metropolitan area and two thirds of its downtown area are devoted to roads, parking lots, gas stations, and other automobile-related uses. （以上这个点是大家经常忽略的，至于机动车对环境的影响,这里就不谈了。）
