在雅思的两个输出项，口语和写作当中，经常会需要用到关于领导能力方面的素材，所以笔者选出 On Leadership片段，以期给大家提供和分析一篇有价值的素材文章。

On Leadership选自1985年3月份的《大西洋》杂志(The Atlantic)，内容主要谈及领导人应该具备的品质，文内遣词造句比较简单朴实，但有极具内涵，可以成为非常好的口写素材。

[1] What is leadership? Its qualities are difficult to define. But they are not so difficult to identify.

[2] Leaders don’t force other people to go along with them. They bring them along. Leaders get commitment form others by giving it themselves, by building an environment that encourages creativity, and by operating with honesty and fairness.

[3] Leaders demand much of others, but also give much of themselves. They are ambitious – not only for themselves, but also for those who work with them. They seek to attract, retain and develop other people to their full abilities.

[4] Good leaders aren’t “long rangers”. They recognize that an organization’s strategies for success require the combined talents and efforts of many people. Leadership is the catalyst for transforming those talents into results.

[5] Leaders know that when there are two opinions on an issue, one is not bound to be wrong. They recognize that hustle and rush are the allies of superficiality. They are open to new ideas, but they explore their ramifications thoroughly.

[6] Successful leaders are emotionally and intellectually oriented to the future – not wedded to the past. They have a hunger to take responsibility, to innovate, and to initiate. They are not content with merely taking care of what’s already there. They want to move forward to create something new.

[7] Leaders provide answers as well as direction, offer strength as well as dedication, and speak from experience as well as understanding of the problems they face and the people they work with.

[8] Leaders are flexible rather than dogmatic. They believe in unity rather than conformity. And they strive to achieve consensus out of conflict.

[9] Leadership is all about people consistently to give their best, helping them to grow to their fullest potential, and motivating them to work toward a common good. Leaders make the right things happen when they’re supposed to.

[10] A good leader, an effective leader, is one who has respect. Respect is something you have to have in order to get. A leader who has respect for other people at all levels of an organization, for the work they do, and for their abilities, aspirations and needs, will find that respect is returned. And all concerned will be motivated to work together.

(一) 用典

第四段”lone rangers”是典故，源自美国过去一度流行的电视连续剧 The Lone Ranger(孤胆骑警)。此片写一个穿红衬衫戴面具的森林骑警仗义行侠的故事。本文引用此次重在强调lone一次，可以理解成“独行侠”的意思。原文意指：好的领导不是“独行侠”。

(二)并列结构

本文使用了大量的并列结构，短语与短语的并列，句子与句子的并列，以及段落与段落的并列。虽然都是并列结构，但是表意不一。

(1) 表递进

第三段They seek to attract, retain and develop other people to their full abilities. 三个动词并列并非互不相关，而是表示出一个递进的过程。可理解为：他们设法吸引人才，留住他们，使他们充分发挥才能。

(2) 表目的

第六段They want to move forward to create something new. 两个不定式短语貌似并列实则平行，后则实际上表示前者的目的。可以理解为：他们要前进，要创新。

(3) 表强调

第七段Leaders provide answers as well as direction. As well as结构做连接时强调前面部分，所以可以理解为：领导不仅给出指导，也给予具体解答。

以上结构方面的使用非常简单实用，可以直接在自己的习作中练习使用。短语和用词亦同样精彩，可供借鉴。
