Task 1
Think of one place where you have never visited but where you would really like to go. Explain what it is that interests you about this place.
Personally speaking, I would probably go to New York City. First of all, I love the movie called Sex and the City. Basically, my favorite character Carrie is a proud NYC girl and I love her. Plus I guess this city is one of the very fashion icons in the world. I am so into dresses, accessories and stuff like that you know. I could just pick up the street snap to be stylish. It sounds cool to me.
Task 2
Some people say that childhood is the best time in a person’s life. Other people disagree. What is your opinion? Explain why.
From my perspective, I would prefer the latter one. As a matter of fact, one can just have many moments of life which could be called “the best” cause we human beings are just being super sentimental at times. For instance, we cry so much when we graduate from say high school and we say lots of goodbyes to classmates and we can’t imagine life without them. In this case, we could say high school would probably the best time in our life. But when we grow older, we enter a reputable university and encounter super gorgeous professors and peers. We might believe college life is the most valuable period of time.
Task 3
Community Service Requirement
A university education should engage with the world around them, but I see less and less of that engagement on campus today. I propose, therefore, that the university make community service, such as working with the local children in town, a mandatory activity for all university students before they graduate. Creating a community service requirement is a good idea because it would strengthen the relationship between our school and the town. Additionally, in fulfilling the requirement, many students would discover a love of service that would inspire them to a lifetime of volunteer work in their future communities.
Sincerely,
Sarah Brown
阅读 : The student proposes to have university to open community service from two aspects. First, it can help to tie the school to the town. Also, the opportunity could encourage students to do long-term voluntary work in the future.
听力 : The man disagrees with the proposal. First of all, he does think this policy would just hurt the relationship between the school and the town, not helping at all. Cause students would just regard this activity as new things and don’t take it seriously. It would just hurt the university’s image to the people in the town. Plus, he believes students just would not have extra time for this. They already suffer from heavy study pressure. He can’t imagine this policy would have any chance to stimulate students’ hoping of doing voluntary works.
Task 4
Systems Thinking
Companies have designed new and improved ways to solve problems within their organizations. Rather than seeking a simple cause and a direct solution to problems, companies are now using an approach called system thinking. System thinking involves solving long-term by considering the “big picture,” that is, how the interaction of many different parts of a large system may contribute to a problem, it is an effective way to solve problems and has a greater long-term benefit to the company.
阅读:System thinking means companies use approaches to solve problems in the long run.
听力: The professor continues to illustrate this term by giving an example. A company has absence problem of workers and the consultant interviews staff to address this concern. He does the research from many aspects such as eating facilities and health issues. It turns out that employees are absent not because they are not motivated instead, they suffer from poor meal and no sports facilities. Then this organization just builds a new gym and revises a nutritious menu and attendance rate has been improved a lot.
Task 5
The professor says the new arts center is not ready for the coming poetry reading event. There are two possible solutions. The first one is to postpone the event and the second one is to change the location to the auditorium in the library. I would recommend the first option, because in that case poetry reading could still be the first event although it may lose some local or students poets since some of them might not be available then. If the they chose the second option, fewer people would attend because the limit of the space although the auditorium is cozier and less formal.
Task 6
The professor discusses two factors that determine animals’ 24-hour activity cycles – an internal clock and external cues. For the internal clock, the professor does an experiment to flying squirrels who sleep during the day and are active at night. The flying squirrels are just left in constant darkness for a month. It turns out they still follow regular sleep-and-wake pattern but not precisely by 24 hours, instead half an hour shorter. So after a month, they wake up much earlier. Later those squirrels are kept in light again. They shift their clock gradually to match with normal activities. At first, they wake up during the middle of the day and finally go back to 24-hour activity clock. Therefore, external factors such as the sight of light and darkness do matter as well.
