In your country when do people give gifts to each other? Describe the occasion and types of gifts.

Sample answer: Personally, I would say that wedding is a typical occasion when people give gifts to each other, because it been a time-honored tradition that the best wishes come along with the presents. For instance, last year, I attended my cousin’s wedding, which was held in a resort. Unlike the traditional Chinese wedding, the couple sent around a list of presents they would like and registered with a local department store one month prior to the wedding ceremony. In this way, the stores kept the list and guests could either go online or visit the store to buy presents. At the wedding reception, the bride and groom gave flowers to the mother of the bride and the mother of groom, and jewelry to each of the bridesmaids. In China it’s usual to give the bride and groom money, called “red packet”, but I don’t think young people are following that now due to the influence of western cultures.

Do you agree or disagree the statement that we should let children use the computers or other electronic devices as early as they can?

Sample answer: I agree with the statement because computers and technology would change the way children think and what they learn. The unique value of computer as a learning device is no longer in question. For instance, by presenting concrete ideas in a symbolic medium, the computer helps bridge the two. Computer presentations are often more manageable, flexible and extensible. When I was in university, there were quite a few class presentations that required powerpoint slides and class demos. With the help of computer, I put the information in a visual way and the computer environment offered greater control to me. It was super time-saving as it helped me to get rid of the complicated class notes and dozens of books. Therefore, the computer manipulatives were just as meaningful and easier to use for learning.

What can we do to reduce air pollution?

Sample answer: As far as I’m concerned, the very first thing we need to do is to limit car drive in major cities, because car-related pollution is the biggest culprit. The manufacturing of cars, the production of fuel, and the emissions that result from burning that fuel all play a part. Since many cities are laid out in such a way that driving is almost a necessity, it can be hard to give up car entirely, but we can still make a change. For example, instead of driving to work, we could take the public transportation, like subway or bus. People who live in big cities are probably already used to taking mass transit wherever they go. Taking a bus or train to work, school or any other activity is not only beneficial for reducing air pollution caused by the emission of private cars, but also help reduce our anxiety since we won’t have to deal with rush hour traffic.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of eating in a fast-food restaurant?

Sample answer: The biggest advantage of eating in a fast-food restaurant would be that it saves much time. People do not have to go to the grocery store to buy ingredients and then come home to prepare their meals. For someone who doesn’t cook, a lot of time and energy goes into thankless jobs of washing vegetables, cooking and doing the dishes. Furthermore, most fast food is economical compared to fine dining. Even extravagant home cooked meals can be heavy on the pocket in comparison to fast food. On the other hand, however, fast food is an unhealthy food choice because most it contains high salt and calorie content. For example, disserts like cakes, shakes and ice cream contain sugar in high quantities which may cause an increase in blood sugar leading to diabetes.
