Task 1

The university is going to make some changes to improve students’ life, which do you think university should change and why? 1.Cafeteria; 2. swimming pool; 3. Student dorm?

Sample answer

Personally, I would prefer the university to improve conditions in student dorms, where students spend at least one third of their time.

First, the quality of students’ sleeping is highly related to their performances in class. If the facilities in dorms, like air conditionals, showers, are improved, students are more likely to enjoy their relaxing time in dorms, and thus they would perform better in class.

Moreover, with a comfortable dorm, fewer students would consider moving out. As is known, living out of school means more time and energy spent on the commute and a higher threaten to students’ safety. None of them would be what we hope to see.

Task 2

Do you think you can learn a lot about a stranger from the first observation or you have to know his personality after a long time?

Sample answer

I would definitely take my time to know about a person’s characters before I make my judgement.

First of all, everyone is doing his best to leave a wonderful impression on others, so what we see on the first sight can be very deceiving. Since most of us are not experienced enough to see through the disguise, I think it would be too difficult to make the right conclusion.

However, if we take it slow, time would show us the real person, because no one can wear his mask all his time, and that’s the best time we can learn about this person. It’s better to judge a person late than to judge him wrong.

Task 3

Sample answer

The school decided to close the cafeteria at Eastern campus. Because there are far less people there than in the west side, the school isn’t profiting. Moreover, the school hasn’t had any idea about  replacing the cafeteria. In the conversation, the man doesn’t think it is a good idea. Firstly, he points out that if the cafeteria was shut down, it would bring lots of inconveniences for students taking classes in the east. At least, they have to take buses to the west campus for lunch and then back for classes, which is time-consuming. In addition, the school hasn’t decided how to use the empty space after closing the cafeteria, which would just leave one more empty space there. It would be better to keep it there before any better idea is come up.

Task 4

Sample answer

In the lecture, the professor talks about the concept of bet hedging. It is a way used by plants in harsh climates to survive by saving some of the seeds for the next year. Otherwise, all the seeds may dry up and die. He offers us an example to illustrate it. In western American, there is a kind of plant named pepper grass in the desert. In order to get through the extreme weather, they adapt a way to go against it. They would sprout only parts of the produced seeds, leaving the rest for further trying. Those sprouted, if lucky, they can be showered by water or rain, and grow into maturity. Otherwise, they would dry up. And those remained would wait until there is enough water or rain in the coming years.

Task 5

Sample answer

The man has a problem that his band is going to give a performance in the music hall this week, but he failed to submit the announcement to the campus newspaper in time. There are two possible solutions. The first one is to go put off the performance to next week. And the second one is to put up posters right now to attract audiences. If I were in his shoes, I’d go for the first solution because this way, more audiences will show up to watch them giving the performance.  And for them, there would be nothing more important than to see the acknowledgement from audiences. Plus, to rearrange the date would give them more time to rehearse, to attract more audiences, and to present a better performance.

Task 6

Sample answer

In the lecture, the professor first talks about how advertisers try to make consumers recognize the name of their products. One way is to repeat it again and again. For example, if the product is named Quick Clean, you have to show it in the camera repeatedly, as many times as possible in order to make audiences familiar with it. Or, you may let the man in the ad to shout the name of the product for many times. In this way, audiences are more likely to remember the name. The professor also illustrated the importance in doing so. Studies have shown that people tend to purchase things with a familiar name, and there is a greater possibility that they would connect it with high quality, so if more people remember your products’ name, more products with will be sold.
