This topic immediately draws my mind to my grandmother, who I’d always like to be with. Actually I was brought up by her, since my parents were always busy with their work when I was a little girl. And not only did my grandmother take care of me with my life, she also had a big influence on me in many other respects.
For instance, it was she who led me into the world of traditional Chinese literature. She taught me how I could read and understand Chinese poems when I was only four years old. Unlike the Chinese textbooks, which only gave you stanzas and verses to recite, my grandmother told me a lot about the poets’ life, because she believed that you could only had a deep understanding of a piece of work when you knew everything happened behind it. So, in my grandma’s version, those giant figures in literature who had been far away from me and my life just became real people. They were peasants, chronic alcoholics, rebels, prisoners as well as politicians, rulers and aristocrats. And this just made it much more fun to read poetry.
