 Some people say that communication by using computers and phones will have side effects on young people’s writing and reading skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (2015/03/28)

Currently, Some linguists and educationalists hold the belief that the massive use of electronic devices has detrimental effects on teenagers writing and reading skills. From my perspective, I agree with this view. 

The first reason is that the excessive use of computers and smartphones may lead to the decrease in the reading time. In some cases, the popularity of voicemail allows users and subscribers to deliver voice message instead of writing letters, which is viewed as a more efficient and effective way to communicate and chat with friends, colleagues and family members. Unfortunately, reading is a cognitive process and adolescents who use phones to communicate by voice frequently may hinder the process of knowing, understanding and learning something from the text.

Another reason why teenagers lack writing opportunities is that they rely heavily on using pictures or abbreviation to chat or negotiate with others in order to convey their emotions, such as anger or joy as most pictures that they use are funny and popular among their friends and they are too lazy to use words to express their feeling. This may lead to the lack of thinking and reasoning process and, sooner or later, it is impossible for them to write in an analytical and critical way. Meanwhile,mobile phones and computers can correct the spelling and grammar mistakes in the text. Therefore most students overlook the basic spelling and grammar rules which are the basic elements of writing.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion that communication by electronic devices poses a threat to students’ reading and writing ability.
