A卷

Task 1: Which of the following community service would you choose to do? Working with children, cleaning the city park or planting a campus garden.

Sample

I would love to participate in planting a campus garden for the following reasons. First, a garden can make our campus a more beautiful place to live in. Right now, there’s nothing but buildings, sidewalks and parking spaces on campus. The whole place is pretty boring, a garden can certainly change that. Second, I like plants and nature in general. I think it’s fun to get dirty, plant something with my own hands. I spend way too much time in the library and lab. Doing gardening gives me a chance to take a break from my life and get some fresh air.

Task 2: When studying aboard, some students prefer to live by themselves or with their friends, others prefer to live with a local family. Which do you think is better?

Sample

I would like to live with a local family when I study abroad for the following reasons. First, living with a local family means I’ll be able to expose myself to new experiences and foreign culture. There’s nothing more exciting than being part of a new family. I’ll be making new friends and tasting different foods. It’s only when I live with a local family, I’ll be able to truly appreciate their way of living. Second, it’s probably safer to stay with a local family than living by myself. Life isn’t easy when we first arrive at a new place. Homestay family members can guide us through this new experience and keep us safe.

Task 3

Writing Center change

The author of the letter supports the changes in writing center. There are two changes, the first one is to hire more tutors, the second one is to open the center at weekends.

In the conversation, the woman agrees with this idea. Since there are only two tutors now, students always have to wait for a long time especially during the semester when there are so many paper to submit. The center will be not overcrowded if it’s open on weekends and those students who have no classes and no work to do can handle their paper on weekends.

Task 4

The reading passage talks about a concept of psychology- Magnification, which means people always focus on negative affects but over lock positive things.

The professor uses an example of his son. His son loved acting and once he got a chance to play a big role in a play. The professor and his wife went to see his performance and enjoyed it a lot. But the boy told them that he had forgotten a few lines and considered him not to be a good actor. His sense of frustration was so strong that he gave up another chance to perform in the following semester.

Task 5

The woman’s problem is her father is staying away for a while and he will have a dinner with heG and then go to the theater after dinner. But there will be a biology test the next day.

There are two solutions.

1. cancel the dinner.

Pro: she has sufficient time to prepare the test

Con: she hasn’t seen his father for a long time and she misses his dad 2. go to the dinner but do not go to the theater.

Pro: meet his father and still have some time to prepare the test

Con: she might be tired after the dinner and the time left is little

Task 6

The professor talks about two behaviors that help animals in tropical habitat survive in canopy.

1. Searching for food alone.

For example, apes. They eat plants that are scattered in large area. If they hunt for food alone, they will forage enough food, but if they do in groups, food will not be enough.

2. Making sound to mark their territories.

For example, monkeys. They have their own territory. If other animals intrude, they will make sounds. But sometimes because of the shade in the forest, animals can hardly seen the territory, so there might be unintentional intrusion, which will cause fight and injury. So the sound made by monkeys serves as a reminder to other animals.

B卷

Task 1: Describe a change that happened in your country, and how it has affected people’s life. Explain your answer in details.

Sample

The education quality in China has improved a lot in recent years. I’d like to talk about computerization first. Distance education has made it possible for people to access educational resources more easily. People can learn, even earn advance degrees from the comfort of their home. This is especially important for people who have disabilities and those who live in remote areas. Second, government has a greater involvement in education than before. More funding is provided to universities. Such funding is used toward hiring more teaching staff, renovating facilities on campus and offering scholarships and financial aids to students in need.

Task 2: Do you agree or disagree with the statement that watching sports program on TV is not a good use of time.

Sample

I agree with the statement for the following reasons. First, I think watching TV isn’t a great way to spend time in general. When we watch TV, we turn our brain off. We’re basically just sitting in the sofa and doing nothing. Lots of people like to eat junk food like chips and ice creams while they watch TV, which is even worse. Second, I think it’s way better to play outside, be in the field, compete with our friends. We can have more fun, at same time get some great exercise. That’s what sport is really about.

Task 3

The university is going to remove the vendor in student dormitory building because it sells junk food, which is bad for the students’ health and the student can go to the store off campus to buy food if they want.

The woman disagrees with it. First, it’s inconvenient to go to off campus store because students do not have enough break time and the junk food could be replaced by healthy food in the machine. Second, the shops outside of school usually close before 10 pm. It would be terrible if the students cannot buy food and stay hungry after they finish self-study.

Task 4

The generation effect

The professor gives an example of two commercials selling soft drink.

In the first commercial, the brand name is repeated several times but people being tested still cannot remember it. In the second commercial, the brand name is still repeated, but there’s a question in the end: what is the name of the drink? Then people would remember the name of the drink.

Task 5

The man’s problem is he has a heavy study load next term, he is concerned about whether he could balance the editor work with his study.

There are two solutions. First is to resign the editor job. But it’s useful. Second is to take the course in summer. But he has planed to go outing with his friends.

Task 6

The lecture talks about two ways marine animals to be buoyant.

The first one is to use special fin. For example, sharks. Fins not only help to swim but also have the power to push forward.

The second one is to use fish bubble. For example, pike. Even if the bubbles cannot help to swim, but they could help to keep float.
