独立写作（Independent Writing）：Do you agree or disagree：young people today are more likely to invest their time and effort to improving the world than young people were in the past.

范文：

In the past young people didn’ t care about improving the world, so they never spent time improving it. That is why it is getting worse and worse. Young people today, however, care about the world very much so they are willing to invest their time in order to improve it. And the reason young people nowadays care about the world is because they still have to live in it for a long time and because they are more enlightened.

In the past young people did not spend time improving the world, so they must not have cared about it. I don’ t know why they didn’ t care about it because I am young and care a lot about the world. But I know they didn’ t invest their time to improve the world because there are so many problems now. If young people in the past had made the effort to improve the world, there wouldn’ t be so many problems. For example, the world is now facing a serious environmental problem. If young people in the past had recycled and done other things for the environment we wouldn’ t have this big problem now. It seems those young people were too busy spending time on themselves.

Nowadays young people care very much about the world and are willing

to spend their time to improve it. For example many of my friends and I often talk about the environment and we all agree we should solve the environmental problem. That is why we sometimes spend some time to clean the environment. For example, two years ago I saw some trash on the street. It would have been faster for me to walk past it. However, I decided to use some time to pick it up and put it in the trash. This shows that I care about the world and am willing to spend time to improve it.

I think that the reason young people care about the world and want to improve it is because they still have to live in the world for many more years. We don't want to live in a dirty world. Instead we want to live in a clean place. And since the young people from the past don’ t care about the world they don't spend time to clean it. But today's young people are more enlightened, so they are willing to invest more time to improve the world.

In the past young people didn’ t spend their time improving the world. That is why young people today are faced with serious problems, such as the environment. But young people today are enlightened and value living their life in a clean world. They care about it so they are willing to invest their time.

范文：

It has been argued that despite the continued advancement of science and technology, our lives have changed in a way that is more tremendous than ever I, however, disagree.

First environmental problems are still on the waiting list. Technology-dominated industrialization has generated such problems as global warming, acid rain and urban smog, all of which have given rise to a series of adverse effects—climate change, death of aquatic life and respiratory diseases. Although the quality of life has improved, there are still many things that could be improved in China, like safety and living conditions. If the most significant transformation in living standards has taken place, how is it possible that ecocide is still a real and ever-present danger?

Second, world peace still hangs by a thread. Take the Iraq War for example. It broke out eight years ago and since then Iraqis have been living in hell. Their homes are torched and destroyed and their families have been torn apart. It is certain that they have not received all the benefits of advanced technology. Superpowers are busy with nuclear experiments, but this advanced technology has brought anything but world peace. If the most significant transformation in living standards has taken place, how is it possible that some people on this planet are still in great agony?

Last the pace of life is increasingly faster and shows no sign of slowing down. Undoubtedly, development in IT industries and communication devices has enabled people to enjoy more convenient lives. However, it is also the seemingly almighty technologies that have put people in suffering. Wherever you go, cell phones make it possible for your boss to spot you and give you more work, whether you like it or not. Computers, which give companies the ability to teleconference and conduct online interviews, have turned our homes into a mere extension of our offices. If the most significant transformation in living standards has taken place, how is it possible that people now are still suffering from deprived sleep, unbalanced diet and strained family relations?

All in all, science and technology have been and will continue to develop, but the fundamental transformation of our lives has not yet taken place.
