Conversation 1:
Student: Hi, I was wondering if I could talk with you about the assignment in the animal behavior class.
Professor: Of course, X.
Student: Actually, it's about the topic of my paper. I wanted to ask whether or not I could write about the reasons of C(a bird)'s migration and how climate change influenced them. I've realized that the impacts of climate change play a very important role but I was not sure because it seems complicated.
Professor: Well, it is complicated. But did anything interest you in particular about this topic?
Student: In my reading, there's a really strange point. I mean, usually adaptions of organisms do good to them, but C did pick up some unfavorable habits when adapting to climate changes. So I'd like to do some research about favorable adaptions and unfavorable ones.
Professor: Umm. It could be interesting. But I guess you'd better change a topic. You know, one requirement of this assignment is that your outcomes should be presented in terms of documentary. So it is important to use research more presently.
Student: Well, it sounds that the current topic needs revising.
Professor: True. Besides, your analysis's also supposed to be included in the video.
Student: I see. Seems that I've got a lot of work to do. Thank you, Professor Y.
Professor: You're welcome.
Lecture 1: Biology
Professor: Okay, let's get going. Today I want to talk about corals. You don't have to be a marine biologist to understand the importance of corals. The tiny underwater creatures are the architects of the beautiful, electric-colored coral reefs that lie in shallow tropical waters around the world. Coral reefs are home to more than 25% of total marine species. Take out the corals, and there are no reefs - remove the reefs, and entire ecosystems collapse. Unfortunately, that's exactly what appears to be happening around the world. And we're going to talk about why corals are dying out.
The causes of the coral's demise are manifold: overfishing, tourism and diseases all play roles. However, it is global warming thatposes the most serious threat to the survival of coral. Corals have a symbiotic relationship with a kind of algae that providenutrients and energy through photosynthesis - not to mention the vivid colors we associate with coral reefs. More importantly, the development of large wave resistant structures is aided by the algae. These structures help resist the erosions of ocean waves. When corals are stressed by rising temperatures, the algae are expelled by the coral, turning the reefs bone white. That's a "bleaching event," (此处有题:为什么褪色)and bleached coral are left weakened and defenseless against disease. Increased carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere also lead to more acidic seas, which impair the ability of corals to form their skeletal reefs since in acidic water, the reefs simply dissolve. So, to prevent corals from dying off, deeps cuts in carbon dioxide emissions are required.
Interestingly, however, low temperatures could also be harmful to corals. Carbon dioxide, disreputable though it is, is not the only reason of coral's extinction.
Lecture 2: Art History
Professor: All right, we've been talking about adventurous modern arts. Now, let me start today's class with another rebel in sculpture. Not only did his works make a creative exploration in sculptural materials, they also challenged the conventional way to appreciate sculptures. Coming into prominence in 1970s, X marked the entrance to a new stage in sculpture. Stone and metal, the most commonly used sculptural materials, are not popular with X. Glass, paper, textile yarns and many other fibrous materials that seldom interest conventional sculptors, on the other hand, do not fail to fascinate him. He prefers combinations of various materials instead and presents masterly technology when using them.
Visitors appreciate conventional sculptures from the outside of them. Many of them are solid while others usually have stands inside of them supporting the basic structures. Now take a look at this, a sculpture of snake by X. In addition to its brand new materials and huge size, the most fascinating point of it is the way people enjoy it. There's an entrance from one side of the sculpture and people are allowed to walk inside it. Both the interior decorations and the views from within the sculptures attract the audience a lot. Yes, they could get a sense of involvement by becoming a part of an artistic work. This bold innovation serves as a great inspiration for contemporary artists.
Conversation2:
S: Excuse me, Professor Tompson, do you have a minute?
P: Sure. What seems to be the problem?
S: Well, I am going to take part in the selection of members of the representative conference in a community
P: Oh, why don't you tell me about this in advance? I would like to help.
S: Well, I did not intend to take part in this activity at first. But my mom told me that she always wanted to attend this kind of
activity in college and did not get the chance. After that, I made up my mind and registered at once.
P: Well, then um… There is something about this activity that I think you should know.
S: Oh, I am looking forward to some information about this activity.
P: This is like an election campaign, you need to analyze specific information of all the candidates.
S: Yeah, that is quite important.
P: And um…, you need to be careful of the choice you make.
S: Yeah, I think I should do some recheck after making the choice.
P: That'll be good. Wish you will do well.
S: Thanks, professor. I really appreciate your help.
Lecture3:
Today we are going to talk about the index of national economy level. Some people suggest that we should use net import value and net export value as an index, because they can show us the net profit our country get in international trade. But, others think this index is limited and should be taken into account, in this way, the general economy level can be reflected.
When the export value is larger than the import value, it is called a trade surplus; and when the import value is larger than the export value, it is called a trade deficit. The reason why some think that the net export value is important is that they think the trade surplus means that the economy level of the country is high.
But in fact, is this opinion right? Not exactly. Let's say the import value of a country is much larger than its export value, which causes a trade deficit. But is this phenomenon good for a country? Actually in general, it might be good. A deficit in trade means there might be more money for stocks and funds, which would be beneficial for a country in the capital markets.
Lecture4:
Today let's focus on a special device to gather water in arid areas. In these areas, people have long been developing devices to collect the water in order to survive. This is a tough issue, since the precipitation in these areas can seldom meet people's need of water. Fog, as we all know, contains a great quantity of water, which could meet the water supply of people in desert. So people have developed a kind of fog collector. It can collect water by condensing the water gas in the air without using electricity. All it requires to collect water is wind, fog and altitude. It used to be made of plastic and could be applied whenever the fog pervades these places. People in some parts of world benefit from this device a lot. Lately, it seems that the research about the spider web might help to improve the collector because of the similar structure. With the advance of technology, this device has been improved for several times.
In modern world, there are a great number of people who solved their water problem using this device, even those who live on the edge of desert. But, it cannot work for all the people. In Chile, there is a small city where the water problem is severe. However, because of the high temperature on the ground, the water gas can hardly be condensed before being evaporated. This device is only suitable for places where the temperature allows the water gas to be condensed.
