Indeed, it is not difficult to understand why learning second languages is considered as a fundamental way to establish cultural identity with other nations. Those who think in this way opt to associate the culture of a country mainly to its literature, whether it be on history, philosophy, economy or laws. In this respect, to learn the language of this country appears to be the most important prerequisite to access the information.

However, it doesn’t make sense to me to venerate languages acquisition as the key to understand foreign cultures. Those focusing exclusively on the relevance of languages with a nation are oblivious to the ambiguity of the definition of culture – this is an umbrella concept that encompasses multiple facets of a society, i.e., arts, economy, or the characteristics of its residents; based on this understanding, to obtain other knowledge may be more effective to comprehend a country’s culture. One option can be the appreciation of the arts of a nation, such as its folk or painting that illustrate its history or tradition; it is particularly important for some cultures without written record.

From what has been discussed, I would say that it is simplistic to venerate the learning of languages over other options in relation to the understanding of the culture of a country, since the definition of culture is an overarching term that goes beyond the linguistic dimension.
