Some people think that it is an important part of a child’s education to go on field trips (e.g. visit museums). Others believe that a child’s time is better spent learning in a classroom at school. Which do you prefer and why?
  Go on field trips

1.Children can acquire a wide range of knowledge beyond textbooks during field trips.
Have direct access to the real world – experience hands-on learning – broaden their horizons and improve their practical skills – apply theory to practice – stimulate their interest in learning
E.g. visit museums: better understand the local history, culture, and art / visit zoos: interact with animals and know their habitats / visit factories: better understand the latest manufacturing technology and equipment

2.Going on field trips allows students to recharge their batteries.
Complete a large number of assignments and prepare for exams – suffer from great pressure and feel overwhelmed – go outside the classroom – take a break from normal routines – reduce stress and feel energetic
E.g. go camping: have close contact with nature and collect samples

All university students should be required to take basic science courses even if it is not the field of their study.
  Disagree
1.Taking basic science courses may be a waste of time and energy to some students.
Not interested in science – force them to take the science courses – have to complete a large number of assignments and prepare for exams – suffer from great pressure and feel overwhelmed – lose confidence – unnecessary – Students are supposed to devote more time and energy to their major courses.
E.g. students who major in language, literature, history, or art

2.Requiring all students to take basic science courses will increase the university’s financial burden.
The university has to hire more teachers, purchase more equipment, and build more labs. – The expenditure will increase dramatically. – The university only has limited budget. – cause deficit

People now can better protect the environment than they could in the past.
  Agree
  1. Nowadays, people have advanced technology to preserve the environment.
The government invests a large sum of money in environmental technology. – An increasing number of inventions and innovations have emerged.
E.g. develop clean, renewable energy from solar, wind and water power as alternatives for fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas – reduce air pollution
E.g. improve recycling technology – convert waste into new materials

2.Citizens have raised their environmental awareness and are more willing to protect the environment.
Schools put more emphasis on the education of environmental protection in addition to academic subjects. – deliver lectures and watch documentaries
E.g. use public transportation rather than driving, separate and recycle waste, use fewer throw-away products and plastic bags

3.The government imposes stricter supervision on environmental protection.
Pass / introduce laws and policies – punish illegal behaviors that pose a great threat to environment – strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection – pay more attention to sustainable development
E.g. punish factories that emit excessive exhaust or waste water, restrict the use of plastic bags among the public
VS In the past, economic development was the top priority of the government to improve citizens’ standards of living.

In order to attract more tourists, the government could either improve safety by hiring more police or improve its appearance by repairing old buildings and streets. Which way do you think is more effective?
  Hire more police
1.Increasing the number of police can reassure tourists from all over the world.
Terrorism has become a serious problem worldwide, which poses a great threat to tourists’ safety. – Hiring more police officers and patrols can have a deterrent effect on criminals and terrorists. – protect tourists, maintain social order, reduce panic – Tourists are more willing to visit.
E.g. New York after 911, Paris after the terrorist explosion: increased the number of police

2.Well-trained policemen can provide more help for tourists.
Tourists are likely to encounter different problems during their trips. – They can turn to police officers for help, especially during emergencies. – win trust and improve the image of the city – Tourists are more willing to visit.
E.g. ask for direction, take public transportation, lose personal belongings and passports
  E.g. the Hong Kong police

  Repair old buildings and streets
1.The restoration of historical buildings and streets helps create a better image of the city.
Improve appearance – impress tourists with the restored buildings and streets – feast their eyes on the tourist attractions – Tourists are more willing to visit.
The Chinese government: the repair of the Forbidden City

2.A large number of policemen are likely to cause great panic among the public.
See many armed police officers and patrols on the road, carry guns and other weapons – remind tourists of crime and terrorism – feel uncomfortable and anxious – cannot enjoy the tourist attractions – spoil their trips
E.g. Paris after the terrorist explosion – increased the number of police – terrify tourists

The advice from grandparents is of no use to their grandchildren because the world has changed a lot over the past 50 years.
  Disagree
1.Study: learning methods, choose school / choose one’s major in college
2.Work: career development, interpersonal relationship with employers and colleagues
3.Life: right attitudes towards life (how to overcome difficulties and stay optimistic), manage personal finance, marriage, habits and diet
