Which is the most important for you to choose a living space? Living in an area not expensive, living close to relatives, living in an area with many shops and restaurants.

Living in an area with many shops and restaurants:
  1. have easier access to shops and restaurants – convenient – invite friends and colleague to home – enhance living standards
  2. living in an area not expensive: is very likely to be far from the center of the city – inconvenient for life and work–lower living conditions
  3. living close to relative: conflicts, expose privacy, can contact family members via the Internet or smartphones

In order to attract good students, university should spend a lot of money in society activities.

Agree

Agree

  2. now:use multimedia in class (e.g. PowerPoint slides, projectors) – do not need to write on the blackboard – provide audio and visual aids – vivid, interesting, interactive – stimulate students’ interest in learning and promote learning motivation –concentrate more on class – easier to maintain the order of the class
  3. now:Internet – study independently after class – do not need to excessively rely on teachers–solve problems by themselves – ease teachers’ burden

Patience is usually not a good strategy; we should take action now rather than later.

Agree
  1. Have only one chance (e.g. investment) – seize the opportunity – will not regret
  2. Take actions immediately – avoid losing passion – put ideas into effect – save time – realize one’s dreams
  3. Have enough time to fix problems and better understand one’s own strengths and weaknesses – change plans if necessary

Some jobs can pay high salaries but require employees to leave their family and friends. Some jobs pay few salaries but allow employees staying with family and friend. Which job do you prefer? Why?

High salaries
  1. higher salaries – make a living, support family, satisfy material needs, enhance living standards (e.g. purchase villas and sports cars, travel around the world)
  2. higher salaries – play an indispensable role in the company – cannot be replaced by others – gain public recognition–realize social value – feel a strong sense of fulfillment
  3. cancontact families and friends with the help of cutting-edge technology: 1) Internet and smartphones (make phone calls or chat face to face), 2) advanced transportation (e.g. airplanes, high-speed railway)– visit home during weekends or holidays

Do you agree or disagree with the following opinion? The most important goal of education is to help people educate themselves?

Disagree
  1. Admittedly, people should cultivate the ability to study independently through formal education. – do not need to overly rely on teachers – further explore the world by oneself
  2. However, everyone may have weaknesses and cannot succeed in certain fields. – Teachers are still needed to provide help and guidance.
  3. Other goals of education: 1) find well-paid jobs to support family; 2) find one’s true interest and promote self-confidence; 3) cultivate the ability to think critically and creatively; 4) strengthen the skills to cooperate with others and manage time wisely

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The food we ate in the past was healthier than the food we eat today.

Agree
  1. today: add poisonous chemicals to make food fresher and more attractive (e.g. poisonous milk powder in China) – gain profit – unethical – pose great threat to health–even cause death
  2. today: fast paced life and fierce social competition – work overtime – have no sufficient time to have meal – tend to choose fast food – fried food and unbalanced nutrition – unhealthy
  3. today: develop the economy at the cost of the environment – pollution (e.g. air, water, soil, toxic pesticides and fertilizers) – contaminate crops – unhealthy food

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The government should support artists rather than allow them to support themselves.

Agree
  1. art– culture – enhance comprehensive national strength – promote the development of the art industry – attract tourists – boost tourism – gain profit
  2. appreciate paintings, listen to symphonies, read literary master pieces – release stress – spiritual comfort
  3. Certain artists tend to live in poverty. – 1) do not have regular income, 2) purchase tools and equipment - money-consuming (e.g. painters: pigments and brushes; musicians: musical instruments; photographers: cameras) – enhance social welfare and reduce income gap

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People can solve important problems by themselves or with the help from their family members, so there is no need for the government to help them.

Disagree
  1. Admittedly, thanks to the boom of economy and technology, people today manage to solve some personal problems independently or with the help of families, such as hunting for jobs and receiving education.
  2. Nevertheless, it dose not mean that the help from the government is by no means needless. – government: fund and power – environment: hire experts, develop technology, and purchase advanced equipment
  3. Social security and diplomacy – police, army, weapons, military technology – reduce crimes and protect the nation

Do you agree or disagree with the statement that teachers’ performance should be evaluated by students rather than by other teachers?

Agree
  1. students: direct recipients of education – whether students have mastered the knowledge taught in class – determine teaching quality and effectiveness – fancy skills ≠ satisfying teaching effectiveness
  2. students: spend more time with the teacher – are more familiar with the teaching styles and characteristics – more reliable and objective
  3. students: more – honest – objective and trustworthy – VS other teachers: competition or may save colleagues’ face
