Task1

The maps describe the change of a city from 1965 to 2018.
task1

The two pictures illustrate the layout of a particular city from 1965 to 2015 and its proposed changes in 2018.

It is noticeable that the urban area has changed considerably in terms of an increase of the local population and a decline of the woodland coverage. Also, a number of transport infrastructures have been and are planned to be built by the end of the period.

There is a river Tam that crosses the city from north to south, with a tributary joining into the mainstream from the west. Some trees covered the northwestern corner of the city in 1965, surrounded by both the branch and the main river. Situated on the east side of the river Tam, a few houses ashore actually occupied only one fourth of the land.

At present, the forest has been replaced by a car park adjacent to the confluence of the rivers, while the housing area has doubled in size. A new bridge has been added to the upper reaches of the river, and another foot bridge to the south. Two more car parks are expected to be built ashore by 2018, with one locating in the centre of the residential area and the other to the south.

task2

It has been a self-evident truth that young adults should leave home and live by themselves in due course, and this is quite different from the status quo in some countries where a growing number of grown-ups continue to share home with their parents after graduation and starting to work. There could be some good reasons for going against the tradition, yet I believe that the drawbacks caused are far more significant than the claimed benefits.

One apparent disadvantage of living with parents is that individual privacy can hardly be guaranteed and family frictions could emerge. Young couples or friends, for example, may find it embarrassing to have intimate behaviours with their partners or less free to hold parties and play games with colleagues as well friends. Their social lives therefore can largely be affected if they reduce such contacts, whereas family relationships may be at stake when these leisure activities become a routine over time.

The choice to stay at home for young people may turn out to be less desirable as well in terms of independent living. Parents usually take it for granted that doing laundry or making dinners are their responsibilities, which deprives the chances for adults to acquire the necessary skills to live on their own or become mentally strong to nurture the next generation when everything is settled by their parents.

On the other hand, living at home with parents is not necessarily a bad idea considering that young people can reduce living expenses and save money for more important concerns in the years ahead. Most university graduates receive a relatively low salary in the initial stage of their careers, and this justifies the behavior to stay with parents for the sake of making the best use of income instead of paying for bills, rent or food. They can afford a house or further academic studies with the wealth accumulation increasing. However, the declining level of pressure from life may discourage one from working hard and realise ambitions later in life.

In conclusion, it is understandable to live under the same roof with parents for the short-term benefits, but the sacrifice of privacy, independence and courage to strive renders it an unworthy trade-off.
