Lecture:1
In the first lecture it is essential to understand each student's educational background. To do this I will ask each student a series of questions regarding their past and insist the student to answer in English. Depending on the answers and each student's English level, I will try and teach my lesson in English.
Listening is also very crucial in part 1 and 3 in IELTS Speaking Test. If a student's English level is not up to standard then I will pay more attention to this student when I am speaking English to confirm he has fully understood me.
Before I ask the students questions, I will give them a small introduction about myself and ask the students to perform the same. Afterwards, by asking questions I will establish their educational background, such as, if they have attended classes before, taken the IELTS exam before and what score they would like to achieve.
As this is 6-6.5 class most of the students will have taken classes and even the IELTS exam before. Therefore, going through the examination format and how it is marked may not be necessary. If all the students have taken classes before, then I would go straight to part 1 of the exams and not waste time.
Similar to establishing their educational background, I would like to find out what each student knows and how they would tackle part 1. This is extremely important as I do not want to repeat what they know already. To do this I will ask each student in turn a few questions and for the students who are not answering they will have to point out any mistakes or where improvement can be made. According to their answers, there are a few possibilities on how I would teach the remaining of the lecture.
Scenario 1: All answers by each student were very short with many errors and other students can not give improvement suggestions.
Example: Which do you prefer to eat, lunch or dinner?
Answer: Dinner because I like to eat.
In this scenario I will have to go over the basics of answering each questions, give them sentence structuring and techniques. Questions can be categorised into topics and types of questions and by going through various different questions, hopefully the students can see where they can improve upon.

Scenario 2: Answers were acceptable however other students can not give improvement suggestions.
Example: Which do you prefer to eat, lunch or dinner?
Answer: Dinner because it is my main meal of the day
In this scenario, I will just have to give students how I would tackle part 1 questions, which is by the Five Ws. An answer is only complete if it answers these questions:
Who is it about?
What happened?
When did it take place?
Where did it take place?
Why did it happen?
So for the same example above: Why is dinner the main meal of the day for you?
Afterwards, I will ask the students the same questions, however when answering the question they must bear in mind the Five Ws.
Scenario 3: Answers by students were very fluent and comprehensible with occasional grammar mistakes.
Example: Which do you prefer to eat, lunch or dinner?
Answer: I prefer to eat dinner because for me dinner is my main meal of the day. Normally I am very busy during lunch times, so I don’t have much time to eat lunch and the choice is quite limited, either fast food or sandwiches. Dinner on the other hand, as I'm not in a rush, I have a bigger variety of foods to choose from.
This is the best case scenario, where each student is very clear and understandable. I will continue to ask questions which are not so common to see how they perform.
As this is 6-6.5 class, hopefully scenario 1 does not occur, but if it does occur, when teaching part 2 I might have to teach more simple topics.
Pronunciation and fluency are also very important and many student have problems with these. By listening to their answers I will determine what words they have problem pronouncing and show them the correct way to pronounce. Students will have to practice at home speaking and listen to more English.
For homework I will give each student different questions to prepare. At the beginning of next lecture, I will ask them the questions and have other students to suggest ideas on how to improve. Hopefully the answers will be complete with occasional grammar mistakes only.
