Task 1

The diagram shows that there are eight separate steps in the small-scale production of smoked fish and they can be integrated into three major stages. First of all, fish are killed and cleaned before being put into salt water. The pickling stage lasts for 30 minutes.

The following stage is to steam the fish and it takes 5 minutes until they are ready to to be put into the smoke buckets. These specially designed buckets have several layer with burning charcoal at the bottom, then the sawdust above it with fish lying on the sawdust, covered with wood at the top. After a period of about 30 minutes, the smoked fish are accomplished eventually.

Once produced, the smoked fish will be selected and divided into two categories: the ordinary ones and the yellow coloring ones, and then be packed into two types of boxes, all of which will be loaded onto trucks.

Overall, the diagram shows that the small-scale production of smoked fish and the cooking procedure are about only an hour.

Task 2

It is not necessary to travel to other places to learn about the other culture. We can learn as much as from books, films and internet. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

Due to the advance of people’s living standard, increasing number of people chose to travel for vacation, which indicates that the information in books, films and internet can not satisfy people’s desire for culture far away from their own habitats any more.

Books, movies or internet do provide people with convenient means of learning about other culture, and the massive amount of information people can obtain via these channels are sometimes in great details. In addition, these also make it possible for people who do not have enough time or money to travel themselves. For instance, a documentary titled Gabon: The Last Eden, give a marvelous visual adventure through out Gabon, a country in Central Africa. People can learn about the stunning terrain, a wide variety of wildlife and the unique culture. These are the views and culture which are not known to even one of the most experienced adventurers, while other ordinary people can enjoy this without trekking there in person.

However, traveling is still essential for people to learn about culture, and learning form books, movies or internet can never take its place. There are two major reasons. Firstly, the descriptions in the books, films or internet are not always consistent with the actual situation, in other words, there is information distortion. This is not only because some authors may stereotype some culture personally and mislead the readers, but also because the intentional leading by the government department or local enterprises, which may embellish their culture for tourism purpose. Secondly, traveling in person can have a fully understanding and experiencing of some certain culture, which can not be accomplished by reading books, watching films or surfing the internet.

All in all, traveling, as well as learning from books, films or internet, are both good options to learn about other culture. However, I think traveling is indispensable for people since the places where the culture transmitted from possess the original and full-scale culture, which may be limited and blocked by words.
