The historical building I’d like to say something about is a typical stone gate house in Shanghai. I don’t know the exact history of the building, but I can tell from its exterior that it can date back to at least 80 years ago. What makes it especially worthy of a visit is that it now serves as a Starbucks cafe.

问题一：Where is the building?

Sample answer:

The place is located in the city center, so there are quite a few forms of transport that people can take to get there. I would recommend visitors to take the subway line 10 and get off at the Xintiandi Station. It’s within walking distance from the station.

问题二：What does the building look like?

Sample answer:

I’ve been there twice and it caught me deeply with its grace and beauty. The building is basically a large, two-story villa, mainly built from grey bricks. The architectural style combines both Chinese and western elements. For example, the design of the roof and windows is in traditional Chinese style, while the patterns carved on the arches and door frames are in western style.

问题三：What is the building used for?

Sample answer:

Just like most of other stone gate houses that have been refurnished for commercial use, this building is now a well-liked Starbucks cafe in the Xintiandi area. So it attracts visitors from home and abroad everyday. I think the reason why people like here is that not only has the old looking of the building remained, the interior has also added some modern decorations. Besides, there’re also some tables set outdoor in sun trap, letting customers enjoy coffee in the breeze on a sunny day.

I really find this building a perfect place to wind down myself because the atmosphere appeals to me greatly. Every time I visit there, I’m overwhelmed by the strong flavor of the Shanghai in the 1930s. The running of Starbucks in the building has infused western culture, making it even more attracting. So for those who are seeking peace and quiet in noisy surroundings, it’s the right place for them.
